Clay stayed back, letting Mark monopolize Joanna during the break. He’d watch, see how things were between the two of them. After all, if Joanna really cared for Mark, he wouldn’t step between them. But the second time Joanna looked his way while Mark talked to her, Clay decided he had waited long enough.

He saw Pastor Carson stand and figured he was about to call for another game, so he crossed the room and stopped by Joanna. “Looks like the next game is starting.”

Joanna took a step back and told Mark she had promised to be partners with Clay for the next game. Before Mark had a chance to react, Joanna took Clay’s arm and pulled him away.

Clay figured Mark would have liked nothing better than to bloody his nose at that moment, so he flashed his friendliest smile at the angry guy and followed Joanna. They played “Skip to My Lou,” and Clay kept a close eye on Joanna after the first skipper tried to steal her from him. To play the game right, he couldn’t hold Joanna’s hand, but he thought about breaking the rule when Mark ended up in the center of the circle. As expected, Mark tried to steal Joanna, but Clay blocked him so he had to move on to someone else. Clay ignored the glare Mark sent his way and grinned because Joanna didn’t seem to notice.

Clay hadn’t had so much fun in a long time. Associating with church people wasn’t so bad. He might even enjoy going to church in the morning. After all, Joanna would be there.

When the game ended and Pastor Carson prayed a short prayer over their dinner, Clay took Joanna’s elbow and steered her toward the table. “I’ve been eyeing that food. Reckon we can get a bite of something?”

Joanna giggled. “We’d better hurry or it might all disappear.”

“You think so?” Clay smiled at her. He wouldn’t mind just looking at her instead of eating. He couldn’t remember ever seeing a prettier girl. Her eyes were like two drops of shiny dark chocolate with beautiful, long, dark lashes. In contrast, her skin was smooth and olive toned with a touch of color in each cheek. She had put her hair up in some fancy style, and while he couldn’t find any prettier in the room, he liked it better hanging down to the middle of her back and swinging free. Of course, he knew better than to tell her that. In fact, she’d probably be shocked if she knew what he was thinking.

They got in line, and Clay helped Joanna fill her plate, although she said she couldn’t eat so much. “I’ll be as big as the side of a barn if I eat everything you’re trying to put on my plate.”

Clay laughed and dropped the mound of potato salad on his plate instead of hers. He spoke low so no one else could hear. “Reckon it don’t matter how much you eat, darlin’. You’re still the prettiest girl in this hall.
